Play-Dough Recipe – Perfectly Squishy & Elastic

Parents in my classes know I’m a little bit proud of my homemade Play-Dough. It’s squishy and smooth, and elastic as well as taste-safe. I joked with a parent that I was like a (my) “Mediterranean grandma” of playdough – I don’t know how I’ve cooked it up I just chuck it all in… don’t measure anything and it all works out wonderfully. NOT! You can totally replicate this at home and it is almost perfectly measured.

But let me tell you it wasn’t always this way! Lockdown had forced me to work on it over and over and memorise the recipe. Here it is for you now so you can have lots of fun with your little one, squishing, rolling, kneading and printing into your playdough.

Play-Dough Recipe

Recipe for 1 Batch (can be doubled, tripled etc)

1.5 cups plain flour (+ a handful)

1/2 cup salt

2 Tbsp Cream of Tartar

2 Tbsp Veg Oil

Food colouring/non-toxic powder paint

1 cup boiling water

Start by mixing the dry ingredients together, including powder paint if you’re using it. In a measuring jug, add your boiling water, oil and food colouring (if using) and give it a stir. Pour your boiling mixture into your bowl of dry ingredients, it’ll bubble up. Mix with a spoon for a little while giving it chance to cool down a little. Then, wearing gloves, knead and fold the mixture for a good 6-7 mins until it becomes playdough and there’s no flour left on the bottom of the bowl.

You can store your playdough in an airtight container and your little one can play with it multiple times – eventually, it’ll go crumbly, icky or soggy but you’ll get many uses out of it before then.
