Let’s talk open-ended play!

This week at Little Learners Winchester, we dedicated the corner of the hall for our open-ended play area, and I’m happy to say it was such a big hit!

So what is open–ended play?

When a child is able to independently play with no limitations that is open–ended play!

At Little Learners Winchester, we provided an area with sensory items such as pasta, cereal, lentils, breadsticks etc. We had clear bowls full of pine combs, leaves, and pebbles. We had an open tub of toys, including dolls, bricks, wooden animals, and dinosaurs – with easy to hold handles. We had trains and cars. We had another tub with saucepans, utensils, and a tea set. We also provided a toy oven. We had empty trays that could be filled and characters spoons. We had all this and more – all at easy reach, in one area, ready to explore with no direction on where the play should go.

I may have been the facilitator; however, the children brought along the imagination, creativity, and the magic of play.
