Little Learners UK has just turned 10! An amazing milestone in our mission to bring mark making and early writing skills to as many children as possible. We are so lucky to have 15 wonderful franchisees across the UK, plus a dedicated learning centre – Little Learners Playspace Ashington. On top of that, the Little Learners franchise is now INTERNATIONAL – with a further four fabulous franchisees in Australia, at Little Messy Learners!
Little Learners UK – not just another children’s activity franchise!
At Little Learners UK, we focus on 3 specific things…
- Encouraging the development of early writing skills through innovative mark making activities and our exclusive Mark Making programme – The Mark Makers.
- Developing educational, life and social skills via messy play classes, events and parties.
- Fostering a sense of community and promoting diversity and inclusion in children’s activities.

Meet Rachel – Little Learners UK Franchisor!
‘As a primary teacher, I noticed more and more that children were starting school without the skills necessary to write or even hold a pencil. A lot of children seemed reluctant and even scared of writing because of the unrealistic expectations placed on them before they are fully ready! I knew that this just couldn’t continue so I made it my aim to make writing FUN!!’
‘I wanted to take learning to write back to the basics and give it a fun, play based approach. So one day, I sat down and wrote out every letter, number, shape, and pattern then categorised according to the simple marks that make them. I then wanted to represent each mark with a colourful and unique character – and that’s when The Mark Makers and Little Learners UK were born!’
The Mark Makers!
The Mark Makers is a unique early writing program for under 5’s devised by qualified teacher and franchise director of Little Learners UK, Rachel Fay.
The early writing programme is easy to follow and can be differentiated within the age range of 5 month to 5 years, although the programme has been adapted to younger children (as part of our Mini Mark Makers sessions), older children and those with additional needs.
The Mark Makers were born when Rachel realised that the children she taught were struggling to grasp the fundamentals of early writing and were overwhelmed by the high expectations put on them at an early age. After the birth of her son, Rachel began to develop a mark making programme that incorporated simple shapes, focussed on repetition and featured fun characters and activities. And 10 years later, The Mark Makers are taught in classes and schools across the UK and Australia! The Mark Makers programme is unique to Little Learners UK and Little Messy Learners classes and is taught exclusively as part of the franchise.
