Last Minute World Book Day Costumes!

Left your World Book Day Costume to the last moment? Or looking to combine mark making activities with a creative costume for your children this year? Take some inspiration from Little Learners…

101 Dalmatians – Mark Making Costume

The easiest costume you’ll ever make and a great way to get the little ones involved too! Sneak in some mark making practice and create a cute Dalmatian costume by…

  1. Take any white clothing… T Shirts, shorts, even an old work shirt or PJ top will do.
  2. Ask your little ones to draw black circles all over the garment and to colour them in. Circles and swirls are one of the core early writing shapes (check out our mark making programme here!) and something we teach every term in Little Learners classes. Older children can go wild but younger children may need some guidance or help.
  3. DONE!

Bonus Steps:

With any left over fabric, cut out floppy ear shapes (we recommend adults do this, as fabric can be difficult to cut for little hands – however, old children could make a paper template first so they feel included! Find out how cutting and sticking activities benefit little ones here!) and decorate with more spots. These can be glued to the headband.

World Book Day – Face and Body Paint Ideas!

Too short notice to make a costume? Work with what you have and use face paints instead to create your favourite book characters. The possibilities are endless but some simple ideas are…

  1. Aslan from the Narnia series. All you need is some orange paint strokes on the face and arms and some black whiskers. Add a cute nose in black or pink and you have the easiest costume going. Tail not mandatory!
  2. Reference your child’s Hogwarts House and paint their face in the house colours. Black/Silver and Green for Slytherin, Red and Yellow/Gold for Gryffindor, Blue and Bronze for Ravenclaw and Yellow and Black for Hufflepuff! Add any props you like such as wands, brooms or a cat teddy!

Face paints are another fab way to encourage mark making and early writing skills!

World Book Day – Mr Bump and Little Miss Whoops!

Now, we have a few options here! For those feeling creative you can create your very own Mr Bump or Little Miss Whoops World Book Day costume by wearing head to toe blue clothes and using bandaids to add in some bumps! Or create a head bandage on older children by raiding your first aid kit!

Or if you’d like to go the extra mile (or if your little one would find bandages distracting!) then why not BE THE BOOK!

  1. Take some white clothes!
  2. Use fabric pens or child safe paint to draw your child’s favourite Mr Men or Little Miss Book Cover!
  3. DONE!

Remember, World Book Day isn’t a competition and you aren’t expected to create a costume masterpiece. Enjoy the time you spend creating a costume with your little one!
