Outdoor Messy Play Activities

Little Learners Basingstoke held their first outdoor class of 2025! An opportunity to get messy and for children to make their mark outside in the fresh air. The class was held on the local cricket field which was a perfect, large space to spread out and have lots of fun.

Mud Kitchen – A super popular activity and perfect for outdoors play. Children can get creative with compost and mud, creating their own role play scenarios. Mud kitchens also provide a great opportunity to develop speech and language skills as children engage with their grown ups and other children. Don’t forget, squeezing and squelching are great fine and gross motor activities too!

Outdoor fun at LL Basingstoke

Gross Motor Activities

As the space we have available is pretty big, we are able to get up activities that develop gross motor skills. We set up the jumping ladder which encouraged children to do bunny hops. The tennis activity helped develop hand eye coordination, which is a vital for developing early writing skills!

Paint and Card Making

There is something special about painting outdoors. We set up a tarpaulin with paper, paint and egg stencils. We also draw pictures on an empty cardboard box which the children then loved to paint, plus vertical painting is a great twist on the activity.

I provided an open ended mark making area where children could make their mark and be creative. We set up cards, pens, crayons, paper, colouring sheets and of course… stickers. Stickers are so popular, a good fine motor activity and encourage fine motor skills through peeling and placing movements.
