About me

I’m Jemma and I own Little Learners Durham & Darlington. I run messy play classes in Durham & Darlington, events & parties in the area!

I am 33 and I live in Darlington with my husband Phil and our 4 year old daughter Temperance and 2 year old son Ira. I came across Little Learners when I was on maternity leave with Temperance. I absolutely loved the classes and I have now been running my own little business since 2016! Over the years I have run classes, events and birthday parties and met hundreds of children and their families.

Until my maternity leave I was a Secondary Science and Maths teacher and previous to that I was an academic scientist specialising in developmental neuroscience. Throughout my career I have always enjoyed teaching others, from Undergraduate and PhD students to Secondary aged children, and I really appreciate the impact that good literacy can have on a child’s ability to thrive and learn.

During my sessions I aim to create a warm and fun atmosphere for both the children and their parents where everyone feels welcome. I look forward to meeting lots of new Little Learners.

Party Packages

We can tailor party packages to your child’s interests and provide a choice of resources to suit your needs and budget. We’ve had lots of fun with a ‘cake smashes’ in the past as well as, for example, Peppa Pig, Frozen and In the Night Garden. The party room typically will be set up with (themed) messy trays, sensory play, painting and drawing stations, play dough, crafts and dance area. Your party can be set up at a venue of your choice – we bring everything required, deliver the session and clear up all the mess afterwards – what could be better?

Attended the Little Learner Monster Mash Halloween Party at Evenwood hosted by Jess. Alfie has attended little learners from the first session at Bishop Auckland. When we discovered that Alfie didn’t like ‘wet’ mess, I thought this was going to be the end of his little learners experience. However, Jess has worked together with grandma and they have enjoyed a fantastic range of dairy free activities! Alfie particularly enjoys sitting in the sand and the Rice Krispies/ oats. He has successfully showed that he can independently use soldier marks, and is now beginning to draw circles, showing more interest in colouring. This week I was so proud to hear that Jess had managed to work with Alfie in painting a lions face! He was so proud when he brought it over to me when I got in from work!
